EPK – GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Energy Performance Certification Foundation (EPK Foundation) has been established on the initiative of the Dutch heating industry and Gastec Certification BV. This industry leads the way in developing clean, efficient and low-energy appliances.

The EPK Foundation is an independent organisation which encourages the use of low-energy, clean and efficient heating equipment, hot water boilers and other domestic appliances relevant to the use of sustainable energy. It does this first of all by enabling consumers, fitters and architects to make more informed decisions when purchasing equipment. And, second, by encouraging the application of innovative technologies.

For this purpose the EPK Foundation develops and promotes quality certificates which guarantee that the relevant appliances meet exacting, objective criteria. Products that bear the certificate are efficient, comfort-enhancing, low-energy and environmentally friendly when measured by reference to state-of-the-art technology and prevailing views in society. The manner of installation and level of maintenance also meet the expectations of Dutch fitters and installation firms.

The quality certificates can be obtained by all suppliers in the Dutch market and have been recognised by the Accreditation Council, which shows that they are granted in an independent and expert manner. The procedures for the granting of the quality certificates are implemented by Kiwa Gastec Certification.

The independent certification of the manufacturers and the visible application of quality labels by them to their products provide a clear signal for all market participants, ranging from manufacturers and government bodies to fitters and end users.

The quality certificates make a significant contribution to the achievement of the objectives of the EPK Foundation since they enable consumers to make an informed choice. The existence of the certificates also means that more and more manufacturers are realising they cannot afford to lag behind in developing high quality equipment which combines clean and energy efficient technology with comfort.
